(April 1st, 2014) In recognition of the Bushnell Park Carousel's 100th anniversary, the City of Hartford will make a million-dollar investment in renovations adding heat, restroom facilities, and a multi-function room to the pavilion, and allowing the Carousel to be used year-round. The Department of Public Works will guide the upgrade, as part of a wider collection of projects in Bushnell Park, carried out in conjunction with the iQuilt Partnership and the Bushnell Park Foundation. Other efforts will focus on repairs to park sidewalks and landscaping, and restoration of the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch.
"The Bushnell Park Carousel is a beloved piece of Hartford history and one of Downtown's most popular attractions. Celebrating its 100th anniversary by opening it year round for residents and visitors alike is a great step toward making Hartford one of the Best Capital Cities in America," said Mayor Segarra.
"We want to encourage people to come and enjoy this treasure and learn about its unique history and art. If people begin caring and supporting Hartford's carousel today, then it can be still be around for their great-grandchildren to enjoy in the future," said Louise Demars, Executive Director of the New England Carousel Museum of Bristol, which manages the carousel for the City of Hartford.
Starting in mid-April the Department of Public Works will begin fencing off areas of the park identified for repair, including the Bushnell Park Carousel, though the remainder of the park will continue to be open to the public during this time. Construction on the pavilion will pause for the Carousel's 100th Birthday celebration on Saturday, July 26, 2014, and for Envisionfest on Saturday, September 20th.
Once officially reopened in November of 2014, the Carousel hours will be Tuesday through Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. To follow the restoration progress or to donate to help the Carousel's restoration process, including the Adopt-A-Horse campaign, call (860) 585-5411 or visit www.thecarouselmuseum.org.
