MAYOR SEGARRA ANNOUNCES SEVERAL CITY OF HARTFORD HOLIDAY FOOD, TOY AND CLOTHING DRIVES

(November 23, 2015) Several departments in the City of Hartford are collecting food items, new toys for children and new winter clothing for adults and children to help Hartford families during the holiday season.  The Hartford Police Department is accepting nonperishable Thanksgiving food donations; the Department of Health and Human Services is accepting nonperishable Thanksgiving food donations and is fundraising for its annual Celebration of Lights holiday event; the Department of Public Works will begin collecting new toys, winter gear and nonperishable food donations on December 2; and the Hartford Fire Department is collecting toys for children.

“Everyone deserves to celebrate the holidays and I commend all city staff who are spreading the holiday spirit with these drives and fundraisers. We’re counting on the community to help make this holiday season meaningful and special for families in need in Hartford,” said Mayor Pedro E. Segarra.

  • The Hartford Police Department is accepting nonperishable Thanksgiving dinner staples like mashed potatoes, gravy and cranberry sauce. Donations can be dropped off through Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at Harford Police headquarters, 253 High Street and at the police substation located at 130 New Britain Avenue.
  • The Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Women Infant and Children (WIC) program is accepting nonperishable Thanksgiving food items through Wednesday, November 25, 2015. Donations can be dropped off at HHS, 131 Coventry Street.
  • Health and Human Services is also raising funds for its 26th Annual Celebration of Lights event in December. Monetary donations will be used to finance a holiday party and purchase gifts for Hartford families. Checks, made payable to ‘City of Hartford, Health and Human Services,’ can be mailed to Elba Cruz Schulman, City of Hartford, Health and Human Services, 131 Coventry Street, Hartford CT 06112.
  • Starting December 2, the Department of Public Works, through their Union, AFSCME Local 1716, will begin collecting new toys, new winter gear (hats, gloves, and scarves), nonperishable food items, and toiletries to fill holiday baskets for 50 families. Donations can be dropped off at the Park House in Keney Park, (not to be confused with the Pond House), at 183 Windsor Avenue.  Items can also be dropped off at the Public Safety Complex, 253 High Street, Hartford. 
  • The Hartford Fire Department’s annual Fill-A-Truck Toy Drive will take place Sunday, December 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Walmart, 495 Flatbush Avenue.
