MAYOR SEGARRA ENCOURAGES CITIZENS TO VOLUNTEER FOR CITY OF HARTFORD TAX ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

(December 8, 2015) Mayor Pedro E. Segarra encourages citizens to volunteer during the 2016 tax season with the City of Hartford’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Campaign, a free service available to lower-to-moderate wage-earning individuals and families from January to April. Individuals with skills in the financial field or anyone interested in helping others are encouraged to volunteer as IRS-certified tax preparers, savings and intake specialists or translators. Free training in all of these positions, as well as IRS certification, is being offered by United Way, the IRS and the Village for Families & Children.

“You would be helping hard-working people electronically file their income tax forms free of charge. You would also be building a stronger community because refund dollars are often invested in local homes, businesses and education,” said Mayor Segarra.

Last tax season, more than 5,000 taxpayers in Hartford received $8.2 million in refunds and credits. The VITA Campaign is a result of collaboration between the Village for Families & Children, United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut and the City of Hartford, among other partners.
