MAYOR BRONIN CALLS ON STATE TO END NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION’S ROLE IN OBTAINING FIREARM PERMITS

MAYOR BRONIN CALLS ON STATE TO END NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION’S ROLE IN OBTAINING FIREARM PERMITS

HARTFORD, CONN (March 5, 2018) – Today Mayor Luke Bronin sent a letter to State legislative leaders and Governor Dannel Malloy asking the General Assembly to end the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) role in Connecticut’s firearms permitting process. Currently, before Connecticut residents can obtain firearms permits, State statute directs them to go through basic safety training certified by the NRA and similar groups. The State Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection explicitly refers residents interested in obtaining a pistol permit to, “a handgun safety course, which must consist of no less than the NRA's ‘Basic Pistol Course,’ prior to submitting the application.” Read Mayor Bronin’s letter here.

“Hartford knows the tragedy of gun violence all too well, and it’s unacceptable that Connecticut law legitimizes the NRA – and effectively requires residents to support the NRA – even as the NRA blocks common-sense gun safety laws at the national level,” said Mayor Bronin.  “Without common sense gun laws at the national level, residents of the City of Hartford and of our state as a whole will continue to see guns from states with weaker gun laws used in crimes.  Today, the leadership of the NRA serves as lobbyists for the gun industry and the NRA is the single biggest obstacle to common-sense reforms. I’ve asked the State to remove the NRA from the firearms permitting process so that we stop elevating and legitimizing an organization that works to stop common-sense gun safety laws.”
