MAYOR BRONIN HIGHLIGHTS COOLING CENTERS AHEAD OF HEAT WAVE

HARTFORD, CONN (June 29, 2018) – Today Mayor Luke Bronin and Fire Chief Reginald Freeman, the City’s Emergency Management Director, highlighted cooling centers available to Hartford residents this weekend and throughout the summer ahead of an expected heat wave over the next week.  Mayor Bronin also urged residents to stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day to the extent possible, and to stay hydrated.

“We’re finally going to have a stretch of sun and I hope folks are able to enjoy it, but with heat comes the danger of dehydration and exhaustion,” said Mayor Bronin.  “During the hottest parts of the day, particularly in the afternoon, please try to stay indoors as much as possible.  No matter how much time you’re spending outside, please stay hydrated.  There are cooling centers open around the city, and I want to thank Asylum Hill Congregational Church for opening their doors as well this weekend.”

The City expects temperatures in Hartford to reach the low to mid 90s this weekend and throughout next week.  Chief Freeman warned residents about excessive outdoor activity and asked that they refrain from opening fire hydrants.

“It is not safe for our children to have open flowing hydrants in our streets,” said Chief Freeman.  “Any outdoor activity during the hottest hours of the day comprises the health and safety of our citizens by making them susceptible to heat related injuries.”

Earlier this month the City also announced that on every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night this summer between June 21st and August 25th, Parker Memorial Community Center and the Samuel V. Arroyo Center will be open from 4 PM – 11 PM for young people ages 13 – 24.

Health Tips for Warm Weather from the Centers for Disease Control:

    Stay cool and stay hydrated.

Drink plenty of fluids, regardless of your activity level.

    Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.

Never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, including pets.

Visit older adults or others at risk at least twice a day and closely watch them for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
