HARTFORD RECEIVES HIGH SCORE ON HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN MUNICIPAL EQUALITY INDEX

HARTFORD, CONN (November 20, 2019) – Today Mayor Luke Bronin announced that the City of Hartford, thanks to the work of a broad coalition of partners, received a score of 99/100 in the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index (MEI), which “examines how inclusive municipal laws, policies, and services are of LGBTQ people who live and work there.”  The City’s score reflects city policies and the longstanding commitment of many organizations in Hartford to provide diverse programming and support services for Hartford’s LGBTQ+ community.  The 2019 MEI rated 506 cities across the country on 49 different criteria.

“I want to thank the many organizations throughout the city dedicated to serving LGBTQ+ residents because their support is critical to the wellbeing of our community,” said Mayor Luke Bronin.  “We’re proud of our work with the Human Rights Campaign to improve our ranking in the Municipal Equality Index, and we are committed to the ongoing, daily work of building and being an inclusive and affirming city.  No matter who you love or how you identify, you are welcome in Hartford, and when we say our diversity is Hartford’s greatest strength, we work hard to match words with action.”
