ON VALENTINE’S DAY, HARTFORD ANNOUNCES LOVE YOUR BLOCK GRANT APPLICATION WINDOW

ON VALENTINE’S DAY, HARTFORD ANNOUNCES LOVE YOUR BLOCK GRANT APPLICATION WINDOW

HARTFORD, CONN (February 14, 2020) – Today, on Valentine’s Day, Mayor Luke Bronin announced the second year of Love Your Block mini-grants, which will support resident-led initiatives to reduce litter and activate vacant lots across the city.  Community groups and individuals can apply for up to $1,000 to fund volunteer-led projects that will beautify their neighborhood.  In its first year, Love Your Block installed thirteen art displays in Frog Hollow, drawing 245 volunteers from the community, who also helped remove more than 1,000 pounds of trash.  Before and after pictures from first year projects are available here.

“We’re excited to launch year two of Love Your Block and give residents the chance to pursue projects that will clean up, beautify, and lift up their neighborhood,” said Mayor Bronin.  “Last year, residents built a playground, painted murals, created a garden, and more.  I want to thank our Love Your Block AmeriCorps Vistas for their hard work to engage residents and get these projects done.”

Half the volunteers for each project must live in the neighborhood where the project is being completed, and the project must be accessible to the public.  Applications are available at the Love Your Block Hartford website and at Hartford Public Library branches.  The application window is February 14, 2020 – April 3, 2020.

In 2018, Hartford was a winner in the Cities of Service City Hall AmeriCorps VISTA Love Your Block competition, which is nationwide grant competition that helps local governments engage residents in neighborhood revitalization efforts benefiting low-income communities.  Hartford received $25,000 to support the efforts of citizen groups and local nonprofits to prevent or eliminate property blight through home repairs, lot transformations, and community clean-ups.
