City of Hartford Awards Over $100,000 to Sixteen Local Artists and Small Businesses

(July 17, 2013) - Sixteen local artists and small businesses will receive more than $100,000 from the City of Hartford through the Hartford Arts & Heritage Jobs Businesses Development Grant program. The program was designed by Mayor Pedro E. Segarra and the Greater Hartford Arts Council in 2009 to spur job growth and innovation in the creative industry. The grants, which range up to $10,000, are funded by federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) dollars and are used for business-related operational costs and equipment purchases. A reception to honor the awardees will take place at the Atrium in City Hall on Tuesday, July 23 from 5:00 – 6:30pm.

“Hartford is home to over 250 arts and cultural institutions which attract tens of thousands of people every year,” said Mayor Segarra. “The City’s investment in local artists, small businesses, and arts and heritage organizations has created and retained hundreds of jobs. We’ve seen the success of this program stimulate the local economy and grow over the last few years. I wish all the awardees continued success.”
The grant program is administered by the Marketing, Events, & Cultural Affairs Division. A six-member panel evaluated each application based on the following criteria: economic impact for the applicant, sound management, artistic merit, and quality of request.

“The Business Development Grant program is the only one of its kind in the State of Connecticut, said Kristina Newman-Scott, Director of Marketing & Cultural Affairs. “It’s important that we support our creative industry to inspire artists to keep innovating in the Capital City.”
