City of Hartford Begins Accepting Applications for the 2013 Business Development Grant for Artists and the Creative Industry

(April 12, 2013) – Hartford’s Marketing, Events, and Cultural Affairs Division (MECA) will begin accepting applications for its 2013 business development grant for artists and the creative industry. Selected awardees will receive up to $10,000 for working capital purposes including wages, operational costs and equipment purchases. The grant—a one of a kind municipal program—was created in partnership with the Greater Hartford Arts Council to support Hartford-based artists and microenterprise businesses in the creative industry to increase their capacity to produce new work. To date, over 30 Hartford-based artist and businesses have been awarded funds from the grant.

Mayor Segarra Statement on Purchasing Cards (P Cards)

(April 11, 2013) – Today, Mayor Pedro E. Segarra released the following statement regarding usage of purchasing cards by the City of Hartford:

“Purchasing cards or P-Cards were implemented in April of 2004. As a way to increase transparency, better monitor and audit expenditures, and save the City money my administration adopted a new policy in July of 2012 that included a decrease in spending limits and the use of merchant category codes customized for each department. The new policy took 6 months to develop and was reviewed and approved by the Internal Audit Department. The Council recently requested an internal audit of their usage and I fully support it. Once it's complete, it will be shared with the public and media.

Mayor Segarra Statement on the Passage of Connecticut's New Gun Laws

(April 4, 2013) – Mayor Segarra released the following statement today regarding the passage of new gun laws by Connecticut’s legislature:

“Today is an historic day for the State of Connecticut. Our legislature has shown extraordinary leadership by passing a bill that includes a ban on high capacity magazines, increased access to mental health services, strengthens school safety and imposes universal background checks.

Mayor Segarra Statement on Veto of Overtime and Hiring Freezes

(April 2, 2013) – Mayor Pedro E. Segarra released the following statement regarding his veto of the Court of Common Council’s resolution to impose overtime and hiring freezes:

“I was elected to this office with a clear public mandate; to make the City of Hartford safer and improve the overall quality of life. Council’s actions make it impossible for the Departments of Public Works (DPW), Police and Fire to keep people safe, respond to emergencies and keep streets clean.
