(June 18, 2015) The City of Hartford and the Department of Health and Human Services invite Hartford families to the Second Annual Kids Fest at City Hall on Thursday, June 25, 2015 to celebrate 30 years of the Maternal and Infant Outreach Program, a free case management and home visitation program with the goal of reducing infant mortality and low birth weight rates in the City.
The event will feature community providers, face painting, balloon art, a bounce house, a petting zoo, along with many more activities.

(June 16, 2015) – The City of Hartford is pleased to announce that 12 artists and business owners from Hartford were the recipients of $100,000 in funds from the 2015 Business Development Grant for Artists & the Creative Industry. The winners are:
“We are honored and humbled for the opportunity to continue our vision with the support of the city. It is such a beautiful feeling knowing that Hartford recognizes the need for women to have a place where they can collaborate, learn and express themselves through the art of beauty. It is our commitment to serve and meet the needs of women by teaching them how to express their inner beauty on an external level,” Andrea Cortez, founder of Tainted and co-founder, Dimari Flores said.
Tainted offers makeup application, private classes and other beauty services. The grant will help the business expand its studio in order to service more women at one time and boost the quality and professional grade of makeup products.
The Business Development Grant for Artists & the Creative Industry is funded through a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and is meant to support Hartford based artists and microenterprise businesses.
(June 16, 2015) City Council President Shawn T. Wooden welcomed Juan Hernandez this week to City Hall as the new Executive Assistant to the Council President, a position he started on Monday, June 15, 2015. Juan has a wide range of responsibilities to lead the operations for the City Council President’s office, including managing legislative affairs, constituent services, scheduling, and community engagement. These responsibilities will fit his special interests in policy design and implementation, education law and policy, social justice and community development.
Juan completed his Master of Arts in Public Policy this year from Trinity College, where he was most recently employed as a Graduate Assistant in the Office of Multicultural Affairs. In this capacity, he managed programming for Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage Week, helped to supervise Promoting Respect for Inclusive Diversity in Education (PRIDE), and assisted in planning and leading staff training.
He also attended Trinity as an undergraduate on a full-tuition leadership scholarship from the Posse Foundation, an organization that helps high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential access college. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History in 2013.
“Juan is an impressive individual with a bright future in government. I am excited that he will be joining us and look forward to utilizing his talents to serve the City,” said Council President Wooden.
(June 15, 2015) City Tax Collector Marc Nelson announced today that the City of Hartford’s Elderly Tax Credit program has been amended for FY 2016 to allow eligible senior citizens to pay their annual real estate tax in quarterly installments rather than semi-annual installments. The City Council approved the change earlier this year.
City Councilman Kenneth H. Kennedy, Jr., said, “I have been personally championing this change for many years and I am happy and honored that, with the help of the Administration, the Tax Collector, and our City Assessor, we’ve been able to help our seniors by offering quarterly tax bills – it’s simply the right thing to do.”
“This change will be a great help for Hartford’s senior citizens who meet the income requirements of the Elderly Tax Credit Program. By breaking the annual tax into smaller payments, eligible seniors will be better able to manage their payments, but more than that –the change will result in fewer delinquencies and fewer real estate tax liens being filed each year,” said Nelson.
The City’s Elderly Tax Credit Program is administered by the City Assessor’s office. The annual application period is February 1st through May 15th. For more information contact the City Assessor’s Office at (860)757-9640.
