Snow Operations

Sidewalks
It is the responsibility of the property owner to remove snow within 2 hours after it has fallen, or within 3 hours after sunrise if the snow fell in the night.  It is illegal to put the snow into the street.

In the case of an ICE storm, the sidewalk must be sanded within 1 hour.

Snow Routes
There are 27 snow routes, nine routes are classified “A” (arterials and other major streets) and eighteen are classified “S” (local side streets). Typically A routes are plowed first to clear for access to greatest number of vehicles, especially emergency vehicle access.  Priority is given to routes with hospitals and hills.

The streets are plowed mostly by city staff such as the Street Services, Waste and Recycling, and Parks Division, and are supplemented by contractors.  Connecticut Department of Transportation is responsible for State roads in Hartford.  The City does not plow private roads.

There two types of Parking Ban.  Level 1, which prohibits parking on Signed Snow Routes. And Level 2, which prohibits parking on All City Streets.  Parking Bans are announced on local TV, Radio, Public Access TV and The City web site.  Residents without driveways may use school parking lots.
