TO:

Property Owner of Small Commercial Business (SCB), Combined SCB & Residential Units and Non-Profits
SUBJECT: Cleanliness of Properties Serviced by the City

I am seeking your assistance in keeping Hartford clean and looking good.  Hartford businesses attract both residents, and visitors from around the country, who judge the city’s culture by the appearance and cleanliness of our roadways, properties and sidewalks.

Litter, overgrown weeds, and trash around properties create a negative impression.  Illegal dumping in some areas of the city greatly deters the city’s overall appearance.

The city provides trash collection services to your property.  In most cities, this service is normally provided only to residential properties.  As you are receiving this benefit free of cost, I am seeking your help in order to eliminate active rodent harborage and infestation, maintain clean neighborhoods, and establish a high standard for quality of life in our city.

The Department of Public Works is committed to keeping Hartford clean but we cannot do it alone.
Please help us by:

        •       Cleaning up litter around your establishments/residences to include sidewalk areas and road gutters.

        •       Keeping your property reasonably maintained and free of tall grass and weeds.  If you own
vacant property, please maintain it.

        •       Not leaving trash and garbage outside of dumpsters or receptacles, which allows rats and
other animals to have access to it.  You are mandated to recycle to reduce your total trash volume.  If you still have overflowing trash, you must obtain trash service from a commercial trash hauler for additional pick-ups.

        •       If you are a business, providing a receptacle for customers at your establishment in which to deposit trash rather than depositing it on city streets.  Encourage its use.

        •       Reporting any illegal dumping that you observe to the Hartford Police Department.

The city will not accept any new requests for city provided trash services or changes to the existing services other than reductions and/or deletions.

Attached is a copy of the Department of Public Work’s Waste & Recycling Guidelines, Rules & Regulations booklet for your review and information.  Your cooperation with this request will help ensure Hartford maintains its heritage as a regional center and our establishments continue to attract residents and visitors, both locally and nationally.
