Single-Stream Recycling Citywide

Commonly Asked Questions

What is Single-Stream Recycling?

Single-stream recycling means there is no need to separate paper from aluminum cans, glass and plastic.  All recyclable materials will be able to go into your new blue cart for recycling

What is RecycleBank?

RecycleBank is a program that motivates households to recycle by rewarding households for recycling. RecycleBank measures the amount of material recycled and then converts that amount into RecycleBank Points that can be redeemed for rewards, gift cards, groceries, products and events at hundreds of local and national RecycleBank Reward Partners.

When will Single-Stream recycling with RecycleBank be available in Hartford?

The City of Hartford will begin delivering blue single-stream recycling carts the week of 10/19/09 and will complete cart distribution by 11/9/09. You can put out your cart for collection the following week on your collection day. You will begin earning RecycleBank Points for your recycling with your first pick-up.

How does the RecycleBank program work?

These new carts have a personalized identification tag. The trucks will read your identification tag, record how much your household has recycled by weight, and transmit that information to RecycleBank.  RecycleBank will then credit your account with RecycleBank Points based on the amount you recycled.  RecycleBank points can be redeemed online once you set up your personal account.

When will I start earning RecycleBank Points?

You will start earning your RecycleBank Points with your first pick-up of your blue recycling cart.

How do I get my rewards?

You must activate your RecycleBank account in order to start redeeming your rewards. Go to www.RecycleBank.com and sign in under the curbside recycling option. You will also receive information in the mail with instructions about activating your account. Or call RecycleBank toll-free at 1-888-727-2978.

How much can I earn?

Households earn reward Points based on the weight of what they recycle. Households will earn 2.5 RecycleBank points per pound of recycling.

On average, members earn hundreds of dollars in reward value each year through their recycling efforts.  Members redeem their RecycleBank Points online or via phone, where they can also learn about their personal environmental footprint through recycling, read about easy ways to be greener and learn what happens to your recyclables once they leave their container.
