Waste and Recycling Division

The Waste & Recycling Division is responsible for the proper collection and disposal of municipal solid  waste and recyclables.  Recycling, as mandated by the State, requires an intensive level of education and community outreach. To meet this mandate, the division has expand its training and educational programs, utilizing $100,000 in grant funds received from the landfill management agreement and lease with Connecticut Resource Recovery Authority, specifically earmarked for this purpose.

This division also performs cleaning and debris disposal on abandoned, private properties that become city maintained or owned. Division personnel also provide Litter Vac clean up on the major city throughways. It also performs mowing operations and operates a weed control program. The division also oversees trash and recycling enforcement and education programs. It services and maintains a litter receptacle program. Personnel from this division also maintain city-owned sidewalks in the winter by shoveling and sanding the properties.

Other programs supplied by this division include snow plowing, leaf collection, and Christmas tree collection. The division also coordinates and assists in neighborhood clean ups in addition to cleaning up illegal dumping sites. This division provides support services to special events and cleans up private properties referred by the Department of Licenses and Inspections, as well as the Health Department.
