Biography of Garey E. Coleman

Garey has lived in Hartford since 1975.  He is a graduate of Hampton Institute, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and of the University of 

Connecticut School of Social Work, from which he earned the Master of Social Work degree from the community organization sequence.  He was the first director of the Urban League of Greater Hartford’s Adult Center of Education, which enjoyed tremendous success at helping hundreds of people in the Capital Region earn the General Educational Development diploma.  He was Executive Director of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America/Connecticut Chapter, Inc from 1993 to 2007.  During his tenure the organization’s budget increased tremendously, new programs were added and satellite offices were established in New Haven and New London.  He served the Connecticut House of Representatives as Assistant Clerk from 1989 to 1995 when he was elected House Clerk.

Garey has also worked in the corporate arena and in higher education.  At his current responsibility, he is very much enjoying the opportunity to serve the citizens of Hartford and the Democratic Party.  He has enjoyed affiliations with the NAACP, the Urban League of Greater Hartford, Inc. the Greater Hartford Alliance of Black Social Workers the WVIT Channel 30 Volunteer Production Board and Leadership Greater Hartford, Inc.  He is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
